Wood shutters have a warmth that's hard to beat, and in a dry, shaded room they'll last for years. But Central Florida is humid, and some rooms are much harder on materials than others.
Bathrooms are the clearest case. Daily steam makes wood swell and shrink, which loosens joints and cracks paint over time. Kitchens see the same thing near the sink and stove. Polycore and composite shutters have a solid core that doesn't absorb moisture, so they stay straight and the finish holds.
Sun exposure matters too. West-facing windows in Orlando can hit surprising temperatures on the glass side of a shutter. Polycore handles that heat without warping, and its factory finish resists yellowing.
Our usual advice is to choose by room rather than for the whole house. Polycore where there's water or hard sun, and whatever material you love in living areas and bedrooms. Because we build everything to size, both can share the same louver size and color, so the house still looks consistent.
